Tohru and I
Okay, so this journal isn't really friends-only, though I do make a lot of friends-only posts.

I just like having this post at the top so random flamers and spammers have an easy target.

So, yeah. You know the drill.

itty bitty kitty committee

Tohru and I
So, this is another LJ dump. I update this thing so rarely, so I generally have a lot of random updating to do at once.

We have a new kitten. P has been asking me for a cat for ages, and I always said no (because I don't want a box of shit in my house), but then I was out at a friend's house and kittens dropped onto us from the rafters of her garage.
Okay, universe/fates, I get the point.
He's adorable, and looks like the kitten I had when I was P's age. We named him Rango.

Speaking of P's age, she'll be TEN in less than 2 months. Where does the time go, seriously?

Z is already 1. She's a big ball of crazy. She's so strong, and she never stops moving. It's hard to keep her out of trouble these days, especially when out and about.

I turned 30 a week ago. I had a big ol' BBQ, and it was pretty sweet. I <3 my friends.
I entered my 30s feeling pretty darn good.

I'm going through the early stages of applying to be a surrogate (it's a pretty long process). I'm really excited about that.

My GPA is in the 3.7 range, which I'm pretty proud of. I have 4 more part-time semesters to go before my BA, although I'll have to change my major if I can't figure out some childcare stuff.

...sounds like Z is waking up.

Oh, hai LJ!

Tohru and I
So, I haven't been on much. Life with a baby and all that. I've been homeschooling P, too, which is pretty cool so far.

Z is ridiculously mobile. She's been crawling, and pulling herself into a standing position and walking along furniture since before she even hit 7 months. I had to babyproof much earlier than I expected.

P has been having fun with homeschooling. We did some cooking the other day and I made her convert things to metric, and figure out how to convert volume to weight. We do grammar lessons sometimes on the tile walls with bathtub crayons. We also work out of a big "4th grade curriculum" workbook, but that's not as much fun to talk about, eh?

I still don't have dreads, and with as much as this baby's been yanking on my hair, I might abandon that plan so I can cut my hair short. If my clippers hadn't stopped working, I'd probably have some crazyshort hair right now.

Yeah, and running hasn't really happened much either. I had a free gym membership, and was doing okay on that for a while, but their hours were crappy on the weekends, and well, the free membership is over now.
I might start going to the gym at school? I've heard that it's open until midnight.

Speaking of school, that's been going well, I suppose. I'm having a bit of a rough time with a bad topic I chose for a research paper, and I'm having trouble picking a topic for another one, but they're not due for 2 more weeks, so hopefully I'll come out all right in the end. I'm hovering somewhere around a B in both classes at the moment, I think.

adding another project to the mix

Tohru and I
I'm going to start volunteering at a local gallery/studio place tomorrow. I'll be working there for free, but I'll also have free reign of the studio, so hopefully I can get some more work hammered out while I'm there. I'm really looking forward to it. I start tomorrow. Hopefully Z will have a good time and be her normal mellow self.

I'm also probably going to attempt dreadlocks again this week. I was talking to a friend of mine about how they wouldn't stay seperated long enough to lock up last time, and she gave me some neat tips for preventing that from happening again.

It has been a really busy day. I was out at a coffee shop listening to snazzy music last night and didn't get home until after 2am, then we had our sandwich-making volunteer thing this morning, then lunch for a friends birthday, then I had to run to the store and get some stuff to take to my grandparents' house, since we were doing dinner over there.

We just got home, and now I have to get stuff ready now so I can go to the studio tomorrow right after taking P to school.

Then I shall sleep. I need it by now.

biting off more than I can chew?

Tohru and I
So, here's what I've got going on right now:

I'm training for a 5k at the end of October.

I'm going to be a vendor at a baby-related event this Saturday, and I haven't made anything for it yet. I'm going to have to seriously crank out some painted onesies this week.
Oh, and I have to track down a card table.

I was just "provisionally accepted" into a BA program at a local university! I just finished all of my financial aid forms online, and I'm going to talk to an advisor tomorrow, if they can squeeze me in. I'm looking to start some 8-week-long second-term Fall classes next month.
(My official acceptance won't come until they get my official transcripts, but I already have a student number and can sign up for classes, w00t w00t!)

I have an ongoing art show at a local gallery, so I've been sketching up and hashing out a few more paintings.

I'm taking P to her hip-hop dance class after school on Monday, a track club meeting on Tuesday, and she's rock climbing again on Thursday.

We have volunteer commitments for at least 2 hours ever other Sunday.

...and I have a 4.5 month old baby.

No wonder I'm tired.

I took P to a checkup on Wednesday morning, and accidentally parked on broken glass in her doc's parking lot.
The resulting flat tire has made errand-running somewhat difficult, so I haven't gotten much done.

I was hoping to get an etsy onesie store up and running last week, but no dice yet. I need to get a few more supplies first.
I also haven't taken the rest of my paintings to the gallery for the show, and I lost the business card I had for the place, so I can't call and let them know what's up. (It's a new place, and I can't find their number listed anywhere yet.) I also need to find out if full-frontal nudity is an issue for them.

Thursday was P's birthday, so I'm sure she appreciated having us all stuck at home most of the time.
We did her party on Saturday. It was sci-fi themed; she dressed up like Invader Tak and Z was dressed as Spock.
I didn't get to the fabric store or thrift shop to find/make something for me and G to wear, so we went as boring humans. Oh, well.

I'm trying to figure out what to do on the job front. I think I'll try to find a temp gig to catch us up so we can re-evaluate from there. Now, the trick is to find a job that'll pay more than childcare will cost.
Of course, money troubles would be less of an issue if only my insurance company would do something radical, like pay the bill for Z's birth. Ugh.

baby clothes are boring

Tohru and I
Have you ever noticed that baby clothes suck? They really do.
I have come up with various ways to infuse them with awesome. I just painted these for a shower gift:

I can't decide which is my favorite, the hot pink Godzilla or the grow-up mushroom (which is not as wonky as it looks in the picture, I just hadn't taken out the paper backing yet and it was bunched up).

I've also made a few with original designs, and I think I might start selling some of those puppies on etsy.

Oh, and I sold a painting online this week. Shipping that was fun.
It was the first piece of non-commissioned work I've sold, believe it or not.

I also have another art show going on. I knocked my prices down to between 1/4 and 1/3 of what they were appraised at by the gallery owner of the last place I showed. I just want to move stuff. I've kind of given up on making a living at this; I just want to make enough money to buy more art supplies.
That's what it's really all about, supporting my habit.
Quinacridone Magenta is $17 a tube, man!

I'm reading Shake Hands With the Devil. It's making me feel pretty stupid for how much time I spend complaining sometimes. I've got it pretty good.

In other news, if I still plan on running a 10k at the blues fest this October, I really need to get my ass in gear.

Tohru and I
I don't know if it's the weather, the pregnancy, the thyroid condition they can't seem to give me enough medication for (they've increased my dosage twice now, but my levels haven't changed), or the fact that I haven't had a good night's sleep since September, but I have just been hiding under blankets from the world lately.

My computer keeps being stupid, which doesn't help either. I was kind of hoping/planning on replacing it with this years tax refund, but I'm not 100% sure we'll get one, and if we do, it's probably only going to cover midwife expenses.

Pregnancy is going well. Baby's growing a tiny bit ahead of schedule, and moving around a lot. Baby was head-down at our last appointment, which explains why I'm not getting kicked in the cervix anymore (that was seriously uncomfortable and a bit worrisome).

I'm 25.5 weeks now. Considering a window of 37-42 weeks for the birth, this baby could be here in as few as 11.5 more weeks, or as many as 16.5, anywhere from March 27th to May 1st.
I'll be 30 weeks at my next appointment, and from there I start having appointments every 2 weeks.
The days might be dragging, but the weeks and months are flying by, if that makes any sense.

Grandparents swooped in to help us stock up. We now have diapers, and the car seat is on its way. I also ordered some organic formula to use in case I have to supplement. If I don't need it, it'll get donated.

The only thing I really have left to buy is the supplemental nursing system (well, that and a few more clothes). I found a local store that carries them. They're more expensive there than online, but I won't have to pay shipping, and I can return it if I wind up not needing it, so that's worth paying a little more.

So, thats what I've been up to.

Tohru and I
So, last year, my mom said she'd bake a pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving, but then she decided she'd rather buy one, but it was too late and she didn't think anyone would have any more.
I told her I'd make it, since I love baking and can make a killer pie.

So, she told my grandparents, aunt and uncle, who were shocked that I was going to "attempt" to make a pie.
They apparently forgot that I've made them multiple pies before, and they rave about them every damn time, and that my grandma and a cousin even asked for my crust recipe.

I made 2 pies last year, and they were thoroughly impressed. Between the 8 of us, we finished 2 whole pies because they were really damn good.

So this year, I said I'd make the pies again. You know my aunt responded?

"Good luck!"

WTF?? I've been baking pies for like 15 years, man. "Good luck"!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!

Next year they can eat a crappy-ass damn pie from Sam's Club. Fuck this noise.

In other news, I have a ridiculously huge pile of awesome stuff to be thankful for this year. 2009 has kicked ass.
